Understanding Sentiment Analysis

With the increasing rate of information shared on the internet in the form of microblogs, social websites, it has become important to understand the opinions or views shared by different people. These views and opinions of users help in understanding the emotion behind it, and are also known as ‘Sentiment’. While a sentiment can help industries like product, stock market, service-oriented companies etc. understand the response of their customers, it also helps them to improve their product or service.

It follows a simple process for determining sentiment of a text document:

  • It breaks documents into phrases, sentences or words.
  • It identifies the words or phrases that can determine a sentiment.
  • It assigns a score to each word/phrase either from -1 to 1 or 1 to 5.
  • It then calculates the overall score to determine if the person is positive, negative or neutral.
